Welcome to IEEE GLOBECOM 2011!

The IEEE Communications Society is a professional society of the IEEE focused on the science of, and education about, communications engineering with the goal of advancing the state of the field and fostering professional development. GLOBECOM is the Premier Telecommunications Event for Industry Professionals and Academics from Companies, Governmental Agencies, and Universities around the World Themed HOUSTON: Energizing global communications.

The global deployment of all-IP networks in both fixed and mobile domains, also referred to as Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and Next Generation Mobile Networks, is enabling the seamless integration of fixed and mobile high-speed future Internet. Seamless access from multiple devices to an open set of multimedia communication and information services is driving the accelerating demand for open, interconnected, secure, and energy efficient multimedia communication infrastructures, devices, and services. The increasing demand for global wireless connectivity and cloud based service provision in particular raises many technical challenges, ranging from legacy migration, interworking, security, quality of service, charging, energy efficiency, network neutrality and business models.

It should be noted that although this workshop is the inaugural workshop under this theme, it did not start from scratch. It is intended to unite different previous successful events which took place in the US and Europe into one global workshop series. On the one hand it is an out-growth of the successful session at the Design and Developer Forum on “Evolution to 4G Wireless: The Role of E-UTRAN and EPC” and a tutorial on “3GPP Evolution to 4G Wireless: E-UTRAN and EPC,” both held at GLOBECOM 2009 and the Future Seamless Communications (FUSECO) Workshop, part of GLOBECOM 2010 Advances in Communication Networks (ACN) Workshop. On the other hand, this workshop can be regarded as an extension of the successful FOKUS FUSECO Forum 2010, which brought together 150 experts from all over the world in mid-October 2010 to Berlin, Germany. A short brief about FOKUS FUSECO Forum 2010 appears in the Global communications Newsletter February 2011.
